Day 1 – Getting to Madrid (May 2018)

Hi everyone,

It has been a while since my last post.  Josh and I have been busy little bees and haven’t had much time to travel. However, we knew we had an epic Spain trip coming up, so we saved ourselves for it. We have had this trip on the cards for about 12 months and on the day  we left, we finally started to pack. Josh went to work the morning we left so I decided to pack my stuff first.

Going halfsies like a boss

Josh came back and it was a mad dash to get everything prepped so we could leave for the airport.

Quick pack!

When we finally arrived at the airport, we decided to take it down a notch and relax Josh/Sim style.

Okay, piece of advice? Do not fly with Iberian Air. The seats were so small, I felt cramped. Can you imagine how Josh felt? After the flight ended and we were standing in the aisles of the plane waiting to disembark, there were two Spanish grandmothers looking wide-eyed at Josh because he was literally twice their size and was sitting behind them. Anyway, we finally got off our “sardines” flight and collected our bags. We then jumped into a taxi to get to our hotel.  This was a sign in the taxi.

Not sure what a blah blah car is?

If I know my Spanish… and I don’t know any Spanish… I think a “blah blah car” means one of the Uber cars.  I guess taxi drivers in Madrid also don’t like Uber.  I did not let it faze me. Instead, I enjoyed looking out the window and enjoyed the great Madrid weather.

Beautiful day in Madrid

Now, one of the reasons I was really excited about this Spanish trip was for the first week, I was driving around Spain with Josh, my best friend Loz and her sister JD. We were meeting each other at the hotel in Madrid and were beyond excited when we finally saw each other.

Excited to see Loz and JD

We didn’t let this initial excitement slow us down though.  We got straight down to business and found a local tapas bar to start eating and drinking.

This was a pretty cruisey meal except that we got a bit too happy moving the umbrellas around to shade us from the sun so when a bus drove past, it hit the umbrella and sent the entire thing spinning towards JD’s head.  Only some quick thinking by Loz who grabbed the umbrella saved JD from spending the rest of the day in the emergency department.  Here is Loz executing the life-saving move.

At this point, we decided we had pushed our luck enough with this bar. So we headed towards the next bar. Once again, we sat outside because by this time, the sun was starting to lose its heat and we were not going to tempt fate with any more umbrellas.

The food turned out to be glorious… again.

However, I feel this place could have cleaned their wine glasses/candle holders a bit better.

After this, we decided to call it a day because Josh and I had only just jumped off a plane and we were exhausted.

Stay tuned to find out what we did for the rest of our Spanish trip!

Talk soon,

Sim & Josh
