Duck Duck … No Goose

So when I’m bored I like to comb through discount websites, for example like Scoopon and see what delights I can experience without having to fork out that much money. And that’s when I found this:

I absolutely love Korean food. I particularly like that all their condiments are on tap. You can finish all your kimchi (spicy fermented vegetables) before any of the main dishes arrives (dishes for which the condiments are for!) and the waiters will always top it up. According to the voucher, for $39, you got a 4 course meal for two people. So without further ado, I bought a Scoopon.

However, the experience required a partner in crime, enter Loz.

So the restaurant was Oree, Korean Duck Restaurant. It’s just on Queen Street in Melbourne. When we arrived, we first had to order the type of duck we would get in the main course. You could choose from:

  1. Fresh Duck Roast
  2. Marinated Soy Duck
  3. Marinated Chilli Duck
  4. Smoked Duck

We went for the Fresh Duck Roast. When trying a new place, always go with an oldie. We then had to order our drinks. May have come a little unstuck. Although they listed a number of drinks, they had no Fanta, Lemonade or Mango juice. All of my favourites. I ended up choosing Orange juice. Loz wanted water and it was odd, the waitress made a weird face at that choice. Don’t worry Loz, I stand behind you!!

Our first dish was served:

This was not on the Scoopon.

So, this was not one of the dishes on the voucher and I can’t seem to locate the dish on their menu. Maybe it’s complimentary? It seem to be an onion omelette cooked in a stone pot. It was okay, I’m going to call it an aperitif.

Our second dish:

Handmade Duck Spring Roll

These were lovely. Really crispy and the duck inside was nice. The plum sauce drizzled on the top and the chilli sauce, all good.

Our third dish was:

Smoked Duck Salad

I did not like this dish. The duck was lovely but there was a weird dressing on it. Reminded me of ice-cream, yes that’s right, ice-cream. How? I have no idea because I cannot make my taste buds remind me of something else. Loz was in a consensus about this dish. But, since she’s a lady who always finds a positive in everything, Loz declared that the spiral carrots were fabulous because they were so spirally.

I should say at this point, I had well and truly finished all of my condiments. But *sad face*, they didn’t fill it up even though I asked them too. Hmmm, maybe the condiments are not on tap. Must eat at more Korean restaurants to conduct a survey to achieve a sufficiently large data set in order to make up mind. Okay, main course!!!

The main was very nice. It was fun to cook the dish. And the waitresses were very attentive to make sure our food wasn’t overcooked and also dishing it out when it was done. What you see here is just under half of the meat we got and we had ordered half a duck. After demolishing everything, we finally made it to dessert.

So it’s difficult to tell, but what looks like white powder is actually shaved milk ice. This is topped with sweet red bean, soy powder and blended nuts. I will say that it tastes way better than it looks. I’ve always been a sucker for anything with sweet red bean. When i read about the soy powder, I was like ….okay. But you it was a really nice dessert.

So, Oree, Duck Korean Restaurant was nice to catch up with Loz. I’m not sure I would go back there because the duck wasn’t anything to rave about. It was fun though.

Lots of Love,

Sim
