Days 4 & 5 – Seville, Spain (June 2018)

Okay everyone, strap yourself in for a biggy. We woke up in Cordoba ready to hit the road. I haven’t mentioned this yet but when we turned up to our Airbnb in Cordoba, we had to reverse our beast of a car into a car lift which got us to the second storey.  I remembered to get a picture of the lift just as we were going to leave Cordoba.

Beast car in a tiny lift!

Even looking back at this picture I still don’t know how Josh reversed the car into this lift.  Anyway, when we finally got the car out, we were back on our road trip.  This time, we decided to take the back roads on the way to Seville.

When we got to Cordoba, we were all a little rough from dinner the night before so our first culinary adventure in Seville was ….

Burger King – Don’t Judge!

So funny thing, Burger King in Spain serves beer. And that is the ONLY reason Josh is smiling in this photo. Ok, minor detour. Let’s get back on track. Our first night in Seville was pretty low key. The only plan we had was to have an awesome dinner. I took the advice of a good friend (Sal!) and picked a place that had legs of jamon hanging from the roof.

All restaurants should hang their dishes from the ceiling

And we struck food-y goal:

After dinner, we walked back to the hotel because we knew tomorrow was going to be a big one. The next morning, we got up early because we had two things on our agenda. First up: the Alcazar gardens. We kind of got lost on the way to the gardens …

I do not see a garden guys?

We asked for directions and a kind gentleman said it was just around the corner which I was very skeptical about but when I turned the corner: Wham!

That castle wall came out of nowhere!

Like all good things, the line to get in was painful

The gardens were absolutely lovely and a definite must see if you are in Seville.  In my next post, we visit another garden which I really want to put up a lot of the photos and so I don’t wear you out, I’m just going to show you my favourite photo I took when in the Alcazar gardens:

Okay, moving on. The real jewel of Seville is the Cathedral of Seville. Yes, yes, another cathedral you say. But wait! This is the biggest cathedral IN THE WORLD!!! (take that all you naysayers!). First of all, the cathedral looks incredible from the outside.

Even lining up to get in was an experience:

The view while lining up

The inside was a combination of a museum and a church. Museum side had a few interesting pieces like:

I think this is a replica of the head of John the Baptist…. at least I hope it is a replica

It was funny hearing Loz and Amrit say the neck wasn’t anatomically correct. Another interesting piece was:

Wow, what a pious looking lady… But wait?
Is she standing on the heads of children???
Church bling

The actual cathedral portion was also  incredible. You can get a sense of how big it is from this photo.

I feel like an ant

Now, the really cool thing about the Cathedral of Seville is that Christopher Columbus is buried here!!!

Christopher Columbus’ tomb – So cool!

So a couple of interesting things. It is not his entire body buried here. Only his main/important bones are kept here. Because of the many wars that have happened in Spain, over time the smaller bones of Christopher Columbus have been lost.  This is because every time the priests flee, they could only grab the really big bones to carry with them (skull, femur etc.). And, recent DNA tests have proven  the remaining bones belong to Columbus. How cool!

The Cathedral of Seville marked the end of our time in Seville. We jumped back into the car and moved on.  Look out for the next post where we will be in Granada.

Talk soon,

Sim & Josh
