We made it to Granada! Strap yourself in, this post is picture heavy.
Before we began our usual tourist jaunt with the other guys, Josh and I went to get lunch by ourselves. We found a great little Spanish bar where the lady behind the bar was a dragon! I was so worried about trying to take pictures, I pretended to not take a picture:
or I took pictures of Josh
In the end I just waited for the scary lady to go out the back:
This little bar had the best tapas of the trip:
After lunch, we rejoined the others and began our trek to Alhambra. I was pretty excited to see this place. When we were planning our road trip, this was the only tourist attraction we needed to book weeks in advance. Quick history lesson: Alhambra is a huge fortress and palace complex in Granada, Spain. The architecture was supposed to show heavy Muslim influences. Even though there was a bus from the hotel to Alhambra, some people (not me!) wanted to walk there instead.
Eventually others began to see why we should have taken the bus:
Eventually we made it to the gates of Alhambra.
When we got there, I don’t think we realised how big the whole complex was. First we had to figure out where the palaces were:
Once we figured that out, we had to walk UPHILL (cue a very not happy Sim)
I got over it though because they were some nice sights along the way.
And then, once we’d made it to the palaces, we had to figure out where to go to actually get into the palaces:
Not to worry though, we finally found our way to where we needed to line up to enter the palaces.
Since we were early, we took the opportunity to see the guard tower and have a look at Granada up high.
One of the really cool things about Granada is that its surrounded by mountains. I’m not sure if you could see in the picture above, but if you zoom right in, the mountains around Granada are so high they still have snow even in the middle of summer.
Enough of the view from above though, it was time to line up to get into the palace.
Once inside, the palaces of Alhambra were really a sight to see.
After we were done with the palaces, there was a garden section of Alhambra called Generalife (yes one word). This was the section of Alhambra where royalty did most of their living whilst the palaces were where they took formal meetings. Remember how I said in a previous post I did not want to put too many pictures of the Alcazar gardens because there were better gardens out there. These were the better gardens.
We had so much fun walking around. Just for giggles, Amrit convinced Loz and JD to pull a classic Indian-pose. You know the one, where the girl smells the flower but really she’s not smelling the flower and just trying to look pretty. That’s right, before the rise of the selfie, Indian people had already mastered the art of looking off into the distance/floor pensively to get the perfect photo. What do you think? Did Loz and JD pull it off?
And with that, we were done with Alhambra.
We are getting close to the end of our road trip but not the end of Spain for Josh and I. Stay tuned for more!
Talk soon,
Sim & Josh
