Lake Tahoe (March 2019)

Hi everyone,

It’s time for our next adventure. This time, we decided to finally visit Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe is only about 4-5 hours drive away. During winter, its where everyone skis and during summer, its where everyone goes to hang out at the beach. Very strange I know but you’ll get it once you see the pictures.

As with any roadtrip, we have a picture of the packed car.

What’s that you say? It looks like a new car? You’re right. Josh and I are driving around in a new whip!

As we headed towards Tahoe, I was reminded of a very important saying:

You only live once!

Yes, very important to make the most of today. I felt good that Josh and I were exploring somewhere new. So, a little bit of trivia. Lake Tahoe is a lake that’s set in the mountains. During winter, its where all the snowfields are because it’s at an elevation of about 6,000 feet. During summer, all the snow melts and feeds the lake and people spend time on the beaches or mucking around on the lake. I could tell we were starting to get higher up when I started to see snow along the roads.

At this point I was very glad Josh was driving because things started to get foggy:

Scary fog as we go higher
Ice and snow, take it slow!

I kept myself busy by admiring all the lovely scenery bathed in white.

And then I saw something that really tickled me… a snow plough!

Look at that beast go

You can now get a sense of how much snow there is in Lake Tahoe during the winter. The snow drift on the side of the road is as tall as most trucks. Finally though we made it to our Airbnb. The first thing we did was take advantage of our natural fridge and chilled some beverages.

It’s called saving energy

Our Airbnb was very cute:

And because it was late, we stayed home and just enjoyed some nibbles before bed.

The next day when we woke up, the world outside looked incredible!

It snowed overnight!

Eager to explore Lake Tahoe, Josh and I rugged up and were ready to face the world.

After some breakfast, we decided to explore the little beach just near where we were staying.

Josh decided that this would be an excellent time to build a snowman

Structurally… definitely resembles a snowman

Josh also gave me some lessons on how to throw a snowball

At this point, we had worked up a powerful hunger. So we headed to a place called Brewforia to have brunch. Since it was Mardi Gras that weekend, everything was New Orleans’ themed.

From here, we decided to go for a drive and visit Sand Harbour Beach. I think I took some of the best pictures here. Enjoy!

I’m not great at getting close to ticket machines in the new car

It turns out tromping around in the snow is hard work so we headed back to our Airbnb to get ready for our dinner. Since this weekend was close to Josh’s birthday, I organised for us to go eat at a steak & lobster restaurant. We had to drive to the Nevada side of Tahoe because our restaurant was inside a casino.

When we got to the casino, it was the most gloriously tacky restaurant we had seen… Josh and I loved it!

Now, I think some ole’ biddy complained about how dark the restaurant was and they couldn’t read the menu because the restaurant had backlights on all its menus:

It made Josh look like he’d found the meaning of life:

Together, Josh and I chose elk, scallops and lobster.

We were pretty tired after this so we went home to recharge for the long drive home the next day. When we woke up on Sunday, it had snowed again. Josh read somewhere we should pack toilet paper because if we’re stuck on the roads, it could be hours before they let us leave. So, we stole some toilet paper from the Airbnb.

Now we’re prepared to leave

Before leaving the mountains though, we stopped for breakfast in a little town of Truckee on the way out.

Having fortified ourselves for the drive, we began the slow trek home. Emphasis on slow because it had started to snow and everyone was slowing down to either put chains on or pull chains off.

It took ages to get back down the mountain. By the time we did, Josh’s hands were hurting and we needed to break so we treated ourselves to a naughty lunch:

and then I drove us back home. And that’s it, another Californian landmark ticked. Hope everyone enjoyed the pics!

Talk soon,

Sim & Josh
