Hi everyone!!
It has been a while since there was a blog post but big things have been happening in the Delaney household and I can finally clue you guys in.
First, I resigned from my job with the law firm and accepted an in-house counsel position with a great startup company. My new job is closer to home and will allow me to make more time for Wally while he is so young. Good things all around frankly. Anyway, since my work visa is tied to my job, a change of job necessitated a new work visa. This time however, instead of flying back to Australia, Josh, Wally and I popped to Barbados!!!
So, the first hurdle was packing. While Josh and I are experts at travelling light, we now had to plan for every contingency for Wally who turned 4 months old just before we left. The amount of stuff we packed was mind boggling:
In the end however, Wally had more luggage than Josh and I put together.
Meanwhile, Wally was very excited to go on his very first trip.
What I found hilarious going through customs with a baby was no one checks to see whether Wally resembles his passport photo. This was a good thing because Wally’s passport photo is terrible.
Travelling with a baby is never easy and after about 13 hours, Josh and I were exhausted but still smiling.
Once we got to Barbados, we were picked up by our lovely travel shuttle driver Michael and we trundled off to the condo we would be spending the next 10 days in. Wally looked a little concerned about the state of the roads.
The sun was setting by the time we got to our condo. So we dumped our luggage and headed straight out for dinner. The closest place we could find was Blakey’s and we watched the sun set while enjoying some classic rum cocktails.
The next day, as the sun rose, we finally got a good look at the view from the balcony of our condo. It was stunning!
At the best of times, it has been difficult trying to get Wally to put on any headwear (beanies, etc.). However, we insisted he wear his sunhat while we were out and about in Barbados. This did not go down well.
Since it was our first day in Barbados, we decided to visit the capital (Bridgetown) and have lunch at the Waterfront Cafe. Wally kindly slept through most of lunch in his baby harness.
Flying fish fillets with okra Fried snapper Ginger and cucumber colada
This was the first time I tried flying fish and it wasn’t bad. Wally however was unimpressed.
The next day, we decided to start our day with Wally’s first view to the beach. Again, we were unsuccessful in trying to get Wally to be more sunsmart.
The beach visit started off great.
This first beach trip lasted a grand total of 30 minutes because Wally kept crying and we didn’t want to traumatise him. So we changed gears and went and did some sightseeing. And for Josh and I, seeing the sights involved going to a rum distillery.
Wally found the tour of the distillery and the rum tasting exhausting so he took a quick catnap while we had lunch.
Classic Barbados fare: fish sandwiches
Because of the heat and its toll on Wally, we decided to call it a day soon after and we headed back to our condo to enjoy the view and aircon.
Here ends Part 1 of our Barbados trip. Keep an eye out for part 2!
Talk soon,
Sim, Josh & Wally
