Hi everyone!
The Delaneys are back with another update on what we’ve been up to. Josh and I are now fully vaccinated and taking advantage of this by starting to travel a little more. Wanting to make up for the fact that Wally’s life has been pretty monotonous for the past 18 months, we decided to spend some time on a ranch so that Wally could get up close and personal with animals (at a time where he loves animals and the sounds they make).
Arriving at Bar SZ Ranch
We chose to go to Bar SZ Ranch which is in the hills near the Pinnacles National Park. From the moment we parked the car, I knew this was going to be, at the very least, a relaxing few days.
Our accommodation was spotlessly clean however it definitely screamed “Slow down and enjoy the scenery” with fairly modest amenities:
After arriving though, we only had 30 mins to settle in because we wanted to head down to the main area to participate in feeding the animals. The walk to the main area was short though scenic and when we arrived in the main ranch area, it really was like we took a step back in time (if the TV wasn’t already an indication).
Meeting all the animals
You could tell Wally is emerging from the pandemic. He was so excited to be out in the great outdoors we nearly lost him in the tall grass!
We made it just in time to see the ranch hands start putting out feed for all the animals.
One of the thing Josh and I discovered this trip is how big Wally is getting and how confident he is in new surroudings now. Look at him approach and pet a pig!
From there, Wally bounced around trying to meet as many animals as possible:
You’ll notice many pictures are not at Wally’s height, and that’s because after the first few times of doing this:
Both Josh and I got annoyed at him having to constantly lever me up to standing as I’m halfway through my second trimester.
One of the amazing things though was the ranch had a calf they had to remove from its mother on the paddock because it wasn’t feeding well when first born. Having lived in the main area since then, Bambi (the calf) was so friendly and sweet and immediately took a shine to Wally.
From there, we were pretty wrecked from a long day of travelling so we headed home to recharge for our big next day.
Wally’s first horse ride
The next day dawned to the most incredible sight from our accommodation:
So Wally is enamored with remotes at the moment and it was pretty hilarious to see that he thought the TV remote controlled the pellet fire we turned on in the morning:
This was an exciting day for us. We had organised for Wally to have a horse riding lesson. So we raced down to the main area early to say good morning to all the animals (again!).
Before our horse riding lesson though, Wally and I helped to brush down the pony he would be working with:
We then made sure Wally had all his protective gear on:
And then it was time for Wally to get on Nemo the pony:
Even though we had booked an hour for Wally’s riding lesson, I was honestly expecting him to only be on the pony for about 15 minutes. Wally surprised Josh and I by being on the horse for about 40 minutes. By the end though, he was getting tired so we jumped off and headed home for an early lunch and nap.
Playtime with Bambi
Even though Wally had a monster nap to recover from his big morning, he was still pretty cranky when he woke up. So we decided to have a low-key afternoon of playing with Bambi.
Asking Bambi for permission to come into his pen Approaching Bambi with care Petting Bambi gently Best of friends
Wally was so happy in the pen with Bambi, Josh and I were tempted to ask Bambi to babysit for a while. After this though, it was time to call it a day and prepare to head back to real life the next day.
That’s it, getaway done. It felt really good being able to get out and about again and hopefully we can plan for another trip before the new bub arrives.
Talk soon!
