New York, New York!!!! It was finally here. So excited about it. We left California in the morning on Friday (might have had to miss a class at uni). Since New York is 3 hours ahead and it’s a 6 hour flight, we got to New York when it was dark. The traffic was disgusting. When I first moved to SF, I had to learn that a road full of cars moving at a snail’s pace was not a traffic jam, a road full of cars not moving at all is a traffic jam. In SF there’s still areas where you can drive at over 100 km/hr. However in New York, it felt like you moved everywhere at a super snail’s pace. That’s ok, gave me time to take this picture.
That’s right, they have these plastic partitions in their taxis. Just like the movies. By the way, there’s going to be lots of “Just like the movies” in these posts because everything in New York seemed to remind me of something I watched. We finally arrived at our accommodation, Hotel Shocard.
This was just around the corner from Times Square, about 200 metres. And I have to say that for the money we paid for this place, it was clean and the location was great. Space, as you can imagine, was a premium. In the following picture, Josh provides a point of reference of how ‘large’ the room was.
In comparison, the bathroom could have been a spare bedroom!
Once we dumped our bags, we headed out to see Times Square at night.
I got over the giant tv screens and the crowds pretty quickly. So we headed out to dinner. Josh had done some research and found an amazing underground Japanese restaurant called Sake Bar Hagi. It was absolutely brilliant and had amazing food. I felt a bit self-conscious taking pictures of the food in the restaurant because we were squashed up against other diners. But here I am in front of the menu.
Josh felt that we needed a picture of the food so here I am in front of the menu but you can now see the pictures of food.
It was still early so we decided to walk on and find somewhere to have a night cap.
I took a picture of this sign because I had already fallen in love with New York within a couple of hours HOWEVER I refused to purchase a tacky tank top, t-shirt or other paraphernalia.
We finally found a cute little bar, I got myself a dark beer.
Josh and I then walked back home.
Like any American state, no one had a kebab on the way home so Josh and I bought some food from a roadside vendor. This is me having a chow on a classic New York dog (yeah, I’m all class!).
We went home and collapsed in bed from our long day to recharge for our next day in New York.
Talk soon,
Sim & Josh
